MILEAD FELLOWS WITH MS JOYCE R. ARYEE, CEO,
GHANA CHAMBER OF MINES AT THE MILEAD LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FORUM
ON THE 22ND OF JULY 2009 AT GIMPA

Goal Setting

*Goal setting is a powerful process for planning. The process helps individuals and organizations to:
*Choose where they want to go by knowing precisely what they want to achieve,
*Determine what to concentrate on
*Spot the distractions that would otherwise lure them from their course.
*Build personal or organizational confidence
*Establish a long-term vision
*Help them to organize their resources in order to optimise their use.
*Measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals.
*Build personal confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the set goals.

Setting Goals

Goals are set on a number of different levels:
*First, we create a "big picture" of what we want to do
*Second, we break these down into smaller targets so that we reach our goals.
*And then start working to achieve them.

Setting Personal Goals

Our Personal Goals give us an overall perspective that shape all other aspects of our decision making.

The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what we want to achieve within a certain time and to give a broad and balanced coverage of all important areas in our life, we should consider setting our goals in some of these categories:

*Attitude: Is any part of our mindset holding us back? If so, lets set a goal to find a solution to the problem.

*Career: What level do you want to reach in your career?

*Education: Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals?

*Financial: How much do you want to earn by what stage in your life?

*Physical: Do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?

*Pleasure: How do you want to enjoy yourself?

*Public Service: Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how?

*Family: Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?

We can set short term and long term goals for ourselves

Achieving Your Personal Goals

After setting our goals, there is the need to create a list of things that we should do today to work towards our lifetime goals. The list may include furthering education and developing positive attitudes.

It is important that we gather information on how we can achieve our set goals. This will help us to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting.

Staying on Course

Obstacles are those frightful things we see when we take our eyes off our goal.

We always need to stay on course in order to achieve our goals.

Personal Skills

We need some personal skills as we set off to achieve our
goals. These qualities include (but are not limited to):
*Responsibility
*Self Control
*Integrity
*Team Spirit
*Punctual and Efficient
*Good Work Attitude
*Cooperative
*Self Management
*Self Confidence
*Honesty
*Adaptability and Flexibility
*Self Direction
*Good Grooming
*Self Motivation

The winning Goal Setting Formula

Goal + Action = Success
Every goal you set needs to follow this basic goal
setting formula: "I will (specific goal) by (specific
actions I will follow to accomplish the goal)." You
may have several specific actions you will take to
achieve your goal, rather than just one.

To conclude, let us look at what we need to
do to ensure that we are in our chosen
careers and are quite enjoying it.

How to Get Your Career Clicking
Identify your passion
It is hard to like your job if you don’t like the field you are in. Most career counselors agree that finding work that you are passionate about is one of the critical factors behind career success.

*Tap Insiders
We do not have to reinvent the wheel. The
Internet is a wonderful resource to find out
about those in our field and how they are
doing. Call it cyber networking if you like but
there’s a world of information on industries,
companies etc.

*Determine Your Value
Have you ever asked yourself how much you are worth? Be aware of the average salary in your field. Remember to conduct continuous research on the salary of similar positions. The main goal is: Make what you are worth!

*Gain an Edge
The best way to keep moving forward is to upgrade yourself periodically by enrolling in courses that are relevant to your field. You can do this through the e-learning programmes or in situ ones.

Some Useful Quotations on Goal Setting

“Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.”- Fitzhugh Dodson

“In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are.” - Arnold H. Glasgow

Violence against women is a worldwide yet still hidden problem. Freedom from the threat of harassment, battering, and sexual assault is a concept that most of us have a hard time imagining because violence is such a deep part of our cultures and lives.
